Is the Viral K18 Hair Mask Worth the Hype?

I tried the viral K18 Hair Mask on curly hair, and this is what I thought.

My Hair History

I have always had a love-hate relationship with my hair. It goes back to when I was in primary school. I remember on a Sunday night. I would ask my mum to put my hair in two French plaits. I loved unravelling my hair in the morning, and rather than my usual defined curls, I would be greeted with a loose wave. I didn’t hate my curls, but I hated not being able to style them in different ways or being able to use hair accessories that could get tangled in my hair.

Fast forward to high school, and my mum finally gave in to my constant pestering. She allowed me to get a few blonde highlights placed around the front of my hair, marking the start of my hair colour journey. Since then, I have pretty much stuck to alternating between a full and half head of blonde highlights. Apart from the time I used a box dye on my hair in college after a breakup. The worst thing you can ever do to your hair, I know.

However, along my hair colouring journey, I have found that the condition of my hair has changed. It wasn’t a surprise; you can’t expect to put chemicals on your hair and your curls to maintain uncompromised. So, I upped my haircare game. I introduced nourishing hair masks, leave-in conditioners, hair treatments and bond builders. But still, I was unhappy with the overall condition of my hair. Frizz, split ends, and dryness still wreaked havoc on my curls. Was the viral K18 Hair Mask going to be the answer to all my troubles?

The K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask

The K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is suitable for all hair types and claims to clinically reverse damage in 4 minutes. Yes, 4 minutes. A lazy girls dream and the best bit is yet to come. Although the product is a hair mask, you don’t wash it out after the 4 minutes are over. After the 4 minutes, you can go ahead and dry or style your hair. I am sold.

The viral hair mask has already gained a cult following, with the likes of Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez being fans. Hailey told Refinery29 last summer that it is her “favourite hair product right now.” She added, “It’s so good; I use that all over my hair every time I get out of the shower.” But with admirers like Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez comes a hefty price tag. A 50ml K18 Repair Mask is currently being retailed at £55 in the UK.

How to Use the Mask

  1. Shampoo your hair and rinse. Don’t apply any conditioner.
  2. Towel-dry your hair.
  3. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair apply 1-4 pumps to your hair. Refer to the ‘Dosage Guide’ for guidance.
  4. Work the product evenly into your hair from ends to root, making sure to evenly saturate the hair.
  5. Leave on for 4 minutes.
  6. Don’t rinse, style or dry as usual.

K18 recommend using the mask for the first 4-6 consecutive washes to achieve the best results. After, you can change to using every 3-4 washes or as and when you feel your hair needs it to maintain optimum strength.

 The Verdict

Firstly, I definitely noticed a difference in my hair after using the mask for the first time. My curls looked more defined and bouncier. It even seemed to make a difference to the front pieces of my hair where I suffer from breakage because of bleaching and styling my hair in a high ponytail or bun. My front curls always seem to take more product to keep the frizz at bay and define the curl pattern. But the mask seemed to do most of the leg work that wash day.

One thing that surprised me was the product’s consistency and texture. Most repairing hair masks I have used previously have a thick and rich consistency. So that when you apply them, you instantly feel like they are conditioning and smoothing your hair. But the K18 Mask is different. It is lightweight and doesn’t feel like it is moisturising your hair until the 4 minutes are up.

However, to know truly whether it makes a difference to the overall health of my hair. I would have to use the mask for the recommended first 4-6 consecutive washes.

 Is it Worth the £££?

One factor that I think is important to consider when looking at the value of the product is how little of the mask you actually have to use on your hair. The K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask lasts a lot longer than your average hair mask due to how little you have to use. It is also a salon professional product. Meaning that every time you use it, you are treating your hair to a salon treatment without even having to leave your house. Plus, unlike most hair treatments, it only has to sit on your hair for 4 minutes for it to work. Overall, I think the mask is worth the price tag. View it as an investment for your hair. After all, if it is good enough for Hailey and Selena. Then it is good enough for us.
